Arson was the headline of the day on May 30, 1990. The victims? A woman whose daughter was destined for the Sparks City Council.

Janis and her daughter Julia Ratti were the victims of arsonist Richard Paddock who was denied a request for parole in May 1990.

According to the article, Julia Ratti babysat for Paddock’s two children before he set fire to the family’s garage.

“When we found out he was the prime suspect we just couldn’t believe it,” said Janis Ratti. “Even when he set our house on fire, the first place I went for help was his door.”

The article continues to state that Julia Ratti started her senior year of high school living out of a motel room because of the arson.

In other news of the day, actor Corey Feldman denied he owned the 25 balloons of heroin and cocaine found in his rented car during a traffic stop for speeding. A judge later ruled that Feldman probably intended to sell the drugs and he was sentenced to prison time.

The child actor is most well known for his roles in “Friday the 13: The Final Chapter,” “Gremlins,” “The Goonies” and “Stand By Me.”

In 1987, Feldman appeared with Corey Haim in “The Lost Boys.” This film marked the first on-screen pairing of Feldman and Haim, who became known as “the two Coreys.” The pair went on to star in a string of films.
