The weekend's racing kicked off with the traditional 4th of July races at Rattlesnake Raceway, the site of Fallon's fireworks display. And it was a night of fireworks, both on and above the track, during the intermission.

"The race was tiring and it was good," Dustin Jenks said after winning the IMCA feature. "Shawn was so fast and we helped him out tonight. And that was probably the highlight of my night, not even winning but having him do good."

An early wreck stopped the race on the second lap but when the green waved again, Shawn Natenstedt zoomed into the lead. A caution five laps later bunched up the cars and this time points leader Dustin Jenks was third and had Natenstedt in his sights.

After two more laps of side-by-side racing, Jenks made the winning pass. And with the help of traffic, he escaped to claim the victory.

"There wasn't a lot of racing room early but as the track got good you could pretty much go anywhere," Jenks said.

Back in the pits Natenstedt said, "Dustin is definitely fast. I reeled him back in then lost him getting through traffic. He helped me out quite a bit tonight and I have to thank him for that."

The Pro Stock main was another hard race but with a closer finish. When the green waved Leonard Lewis briefly led until Vince Malone used an outside move to grab the point.

Three laps into the race the caution flew when Jake Holland's car suffered a blown tire and sent him for a quick visit to the pits. Mike Reid led next until Rob Grace grabbed the point.

Back in the pack, Jesse Gonzalez was on the move and soon had the fleeing Grace in his sights. With four to go, Gonzalez took the lead and scored a narrow victory over Grace.

"I didn't know if I was going to get Robby or not. It was sure hard and I didn't know if I could do it or it was going to be his night," Gonzalez said. "He's getting' way faster and getting a new car he and his brother built over the winter. They're getting it figured out so I have to go home and do some homework."

One crowd favorite was the Bombers that ran on a Figure-8 track. More than a few times everyone gasped as two cars just missed each other racing through the intersection.

In the end however, Clint Baglin's car was the only one left running and he took the victory.

Bob Bender won the 318 Modified main but had to hold off Glenn Lee to do it. The Dwarf Car feature was slowed by five cautions but Gene Kay dominated the field on his way to the win.

The GenX feature turned into a two-car battle as Matt Sherman and John Schilling swapped positions for much of the race. Then things went wild with three to go.

First two cars collected each other and slid to a stop on the infield with Chris Neal's on fire. As the safety crews rushed to the scene, Paul Yamanaka jumped from his car and pulled Neal, who is handicapped, to safety.

When racing resumed Sherman got the lead but it would be short lived. Heading for the white flag, his car exited Turn 4, went up the banking and slammed into the outer wall with the entire racer came off the ground.

Somehow Sherman got his car back to the pits but the race was stopped as the impact broke the wall. Fortunately, Sherman was only sore and shaken up in the nasty looking incident.

After more concrete blocks were put in place, there was a one-lap sprint to the finish, which Schilling won followed by Bryan Kaster, Yamanaka and Mandy Ellsworth.

There were so many Hobby Stocks on hand that it took a B Main to set the final field. With so many classes on hand, and a long fireworks display, the Hobby Stock A main started after midnight.

In the first two laps there were two cautions then disaster struck on the third green flag lap when three cars tangled coming out of Turn 4. One car slammed into the outer wall, just past where Sherman hit it, but the heavier car broke the wall beyond immediate repair.

The wall and catch fence are for the protection of the spectators and due to the damage the officials had no choice but to cancel the rest of the racing. Now they'll have two weeks to make repairs and the next Hobby Stock race will be for double points.

•On Sunday, both heat and the holiday weekend kept the rider count low for the second round of the Silver Peak MX summer series held at the Mustang Motor Plex.

Topping the main pro classes was Ryan Eager. In fact he swept the day by winning all four of this races.

After dominating the final 250/450 moto he said. "I think it's easier to be in the lead because I'm on my small bike now and they're on 450s. If I get stuck behind them I get all the roost and stuff that hurts.

In the final 125/250 pro moto Donny Roberts, who won the 25+ and 35+ pro divisions, stayed close but eventually faded while Eager once again dominated the race.

"Yes I was watching and could hear him (Roberts) for the first two laps. So I just kept my pace up and gapped him out," Eager said.

Gavin Clouser in Supermini and Open 65cc, Christian Huber, in 125/250 and 250/450 Intermediate and Anthony Pulera in 30+ Expert and 38+ Intermediate were the only other riders scoring double victories.

At the other end of the age ladder Kaige Lewis, Travis Whitwam and Dallas Dussault won their respective Pee Wee classes.

While there were some crashes during the day, all the riders escaped with only minor injuries.

•This weekend the new Lovelock Speedway hosts a Saturday-Sunday show starting at 1 p.m. each day and featuring the IMCA Modifieds. On Saturday evening, at 6 p.m., the American Valley Speedway in Quincy, Calif. hosts a show with its regular three divisions.
