Reno Fire Department investigators say the fire, reported at about 2:38 a.m., was confined to the apartment in which it started. One of the residents of the apartment told fire investigators she had probably fallen asleep while smoking and that she awoke to the smell of smoke and the sound of smoke alarms going off. She said she was able to awake the other resident who was in another bedroom and both escaped without harm.
The other apartments in the unit were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters conducting a search of the building located a cat belonging to the two occupants of the apartment where the fire originated and it was treated for smoke inhalation.
About 30 Reno firefighters responded to the incident with three structure fire engines, two ladder trucks, a rescue unit, air support unit and including a battalion chief, safety officer, fire investigator and the fire department’s chaplain. The Reno Fire Department requested the American Red Cross, which is providing the occupants of the apartment with temporary housing and other assistance.
