RENO — Reno firefighters saved five apartments and minimized damage to two others after fire destroyed the second floor apartment where it started late Thursday afternoon at the Hillview Terrace apartment complex at 8200 Offenhauser Drive.

Fire investigators believe the cause of the fire is related to discarded smoking materials on the outside deck of the second floor apartment. Investigators believe the smoking materials may have blown out of receptacles and smoldered for some time before fire broke out.

The American Red Cross is providing temporary lodging and other assistance to four adult residents, while the other two adults and child made arrangements to stay with friends. No injuries related to the fire were reported.
