The Regional Transportation Commission is offering free bus rides on any Sierra Spirit, RTC Ride or Rapid bus on New Year’s Eve. The free rides start at 7 p.m. and continue until 4 a.m.

The Never Drive Drunk program will have more than 21 drivers volunteering their services to get members and their vehicles safely home. The program will send two drivers to the location of the inebriated person: one to take the driver home in their vehicle and one to follow to bring that driver to the next call. Also, if there are guests that came with the drinking driver they will be taken to their own homes first. The service requires a membership, but on New Year’s Eve, non-members can still call for a ride and join then, according to a release from the organization. The number is 1-877-NDD-5535.

The Never Drive Drunk program joins the efforts of AAA Nevada’s Tipsy Tow, which takes you and your vehicle home, with the first five miles free. That number is 1-800-GET HELP.

Breakin' the law

These are some actions that may get you in trouble on New Year’s Eve in downtown Reno:

• No drinking on public streets. Alcohol consumption is not allowed on city streets at any time.

• Enforcement action will be taken against minors in possession of or consuming alcohol.

• No glass containers of any kind are allowed in the downtown area. Businesses will be asked to serve drinks in plastic containers.

• Pets are not allowed in the downtown area.

• Possession and use of fireworks is illegal.

• No weapons.

• No fighting.

“The Reno Police Department wants people to have a good time on New Year’s Eve but not at the expense of others,” said Reno Police Lt. Mohammed Rafaqat.

He added that there will be no tolerance for disorderly behavior.
