If all the world is a stage, then the cast and crew of the Truckee Meadows Community College Theatre Company is capitalizing on the opportunity to make William Shakespeare’s well-known quote true for its cast members.

The company has been given the opportunity to perform at the Fringe Festival in 2011. The festival is held every summer in Edinburgh, Scotland. To raise money for the trip, the troupe will be holding a wine tasting on Saturday with the help of donations from the Kiwanis Club.

“The Fringe Festival is one of the biggest international theater festivals in the world,” said John Frederick, TMCC Theatre’s manager. “It happens for two weeks in August in Edinburgh, Scotland and there is 500,000 people that attend it.”

Frederick explained that performances take place in pubs, coffee shops, restaurants and just about anywhere that has enough space to hold actors and actresses ready to display their craft.

“Theatre is everywhere and in conjunction with it they do workshops with actors and directors,” Frederick said, adding that colleges, theaters and other production companies do talent scouting at the festival. “It could open up a lot of doors for a performer.”

TMCC Theatre’s trip to the Fringe Festival, which takes place the first two weeks in August 2011, has spurred the need to raise money for the cost of the trip.

“Basically what we’re doing, because it costs so much to go, we’re trying to raise $100,000 by next year,” Frederick said. “We actually are trying to raise money right now because we make payments to the company up until a couple months before.”

With the June 2011 deadline looming in the future, the company’s first fundraiser will be held Saturday and will be a wine tasting with a twist.

“We’re all going to be performing some songs, some musical theater and some classical pieces while we’re explaining what the fundraiser is about,” Frederick said.

The wine tasting will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sierra Arts Foundation located at 17 S. Virginia St. in Reno.

“All the funds that we’re raising are for the plane tickets for the students, meals, the places they’re staying and entrance into the festival because some of the places cost,” Frederick said, adding 20 students will be on the trip. “We’re taking the cast from ‘The (25th Annual) Putnam County Spelling Bee’ and that’s what we’ll be performing.

“We pretty much knew what we were going to do because it’s a good, low-tech show and all the students that are in it are still here next year,” Frederick added, explaining that many students don’t stay at TMCC very long but all the actors from “Putnam County” will be returning to school next year. “We can go over and perform it virtually with their stage and just show off the talent of the students.”

For future fundraisers to get the team of 20 to Edinburgh, Frederick said the company plans on holding cabaret nights and other events to accomplish its $100,000 goal

“What better thing than to send these students to an international festival where people there could say ‘Where’s Reno? And who are these incredible actors?’ ” Frederick said. “What an opportunity to have to be able to send our students to potentially perform for 500,000 people. But this could be one of the biggest audiences that a Reno theater has performed for. This could help change theater for Reno.”

Tickets for Saturday’s wine tasting are $25 with all proceeds going directly to TMCC Theatre. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.showtix4u.com or by calling (866) 967-8167 or 789-5671. Donations can also be made by visiting www.tmcc.edu/foundation/downloads/forms/submit/giving.
