LAS VEGAS — Former Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn is dead.

The 73-year-old governor died Thursday morning at University Medical Center in Las Vegas after falling from the roof of his home.

Las Vegas police Officer Bill Cassell says police responded about 11 a.m. to a report that a man had been injured in a fall at Guinn’s home in Las Vegas, and the man was transported to UMC.

Guinn was a Republican who served as governor from 1998 to 2007. He was a former superintendent of the Clark County School District in Las Vegas.

“Today, the citizens of Sparks and I send our heartfelt condolences to Dema and the entire Guinn family on the sudden loss of a great American, and a great Nevadan.  Gov. Guinn served his state as honorably as anyone I have ever known. He was an educator, businessman and leader.  During his tenure as governor, he tackled many challenges and solved many problems that confronted our state. His dedication to learning led to a stronger higher education system and to the Millennium Scholarship which gave countless young Nevadans a college education.  On behalf of a grateful city, thank you and may God bless Gov. Guinn.”

— Sparks Mayor Geno Martini

“He was the right guy for the times, and he had the guts to stand up and do what was best for the citizens of Nevada.”

— Greg Bortolin, communications and government affairs director for the Desert Research Institute and Guinn’s spokesman from 2001-2005.
