The Reno Aces blew up for eight runs to break open a tie game and earn a series win over the Fresno Grizzlies, cruising to a 14-7 victory Monday night in front of 5,049 fans at Aces Ballpark.
The first three batters of the bottom of the sixth reached base for Reno, causing the floodgates to open on Yunesky Sanchez’s bases-clearing double.
The Aces added to their 9-6 lead on Ryan Roberts’ sacrifice fly, John Hester’s RBI double and Brandon Allen’s three-run bomb, increasing the edge to 14-6.
Both Allen and Hester drove in four runs apiece in the rout.
The game was close early on. The Aces got out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Doug Deeds leadoff double and a Hester sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Reno didn’t get to enjoy that lead long. Jesus Guzman launched a leadoff solo shot to left-center field, knotting the game at 1-1.
Then
it was
Fresno’s turn to take the lead. Grizzlies pitcher Eric Hacker drove in a pair with a hard double with two outs in the top of the second, making it a 3-1 game.
Reno got the deficit back down to one in the bottom half of the second. Allen blasted a no-doubter to deep right field, cutting into Fresno ’s lead, 3-2.
Like clockwork, the action heated up again in the third.
The Grizzlies rallied for two more runs in the third on a Matt Downs RBI groundout and a Brett Pill run-scoring single to center field.
The home runs kept on coming in the fourth frame as Hester left the yard. His solo home run hit off the scoreboard in left field for a 5-3 score.
Two batters later, Ed Rogers took Hacker deep over the center-field wall with two outs and got Reno to within 5-4.
In the fifth, Pill and Jackson Williams traded places on the basepaths with doubles, pushing the lead back up to 6-4.
In the bottom half of the inning, pinch hitter Chris Rahl kept the home run derby going with a leadoff homer, the Aces’ fourth homer in the game and the seventh Hacker has allowed in his last two starts against Reno.
However, this time Reno kept the rally going in order to tie the game at 6-6 on Hester’s RBI single that plated Deeds from second. Deeds got into scoring position after a passed ball.
After Reno’s big inning in the sixth, Fresno got a run back in the seventh after Guzman doubled and eventually scored on a passed ball for the final 14-7 margin.
Reno (44-59) opens a four-game home series with Las Vegas at 7:05 p.m. today. Matt Torra (7-6, 4.18 ERA) will take on the 51’s Robert Ray (3-5, 4.95 ERA).
